On September 17, 2003, the constructed wetland for treatment of sewage and wastewater began cleaning the wastewater from Grailville’s four main retreat center buildings, including the dining room, laundry, and dormitory.
Because this is the only full scale, operating system of its kind in Ohio, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with the University of Cincinnati Environmental Engineering department is conducting a research project in Grailville’s wetland. For up to a three-year period, this project will look at ways to improve the nutrient removal carried out by the wetland.
The Greater Cincinnati Foundation
funds a full-time position for an environmental education coordinator from June 2004 - June 2005. The project being developed through the position is called Grailville Renewing Our Water. GROW is charged with designing and implementing wetland programs for adult and youth groups, collaborating with local schools and universities, informing government officials and land developers, and training a cadre of volunteers as tour guides.
Environmental education programs based on water treatment and watershed issues are available for
all age levels,
including four different options for young people. A series of workshops for adults offers a wide variety of opportunities to learn about native plants, prairies and
wetlands, and the relationship between our spirituality, ethics, and caring for creation. The Ohio Environmental Education Fund of the Ohio EPA funds a grant supporting these programs through 2005.
GROW seeks volunteers who wish to learn about watershed issues in depth and who would like to contribute some time to maintaining the living system that is restoring our water. Volunteers receive training to lead tours and/or perform ongoing maintenance of the wetland, rain gardens, and prairie leach field.
